Saturday's Mega Garage Sale, The Movies and Rita Coolidge

Remember THIS?  Well I got up early Saturday morning (nothing new there!) and headed down the street to the garage sales.  I probably should have taken the bus, because there was no place to park and I had to walk about three blocks.  Not that I didn't NEED to walk those three blocks, mind you.
I am here to report back that the 32nd annual Sunwood Street Faire garage sale was bigger than ever.  Glad I didn't take a cart or anything, because I could hardly walk down the sidewalk or even in the street without bumping into someone.  I read this morning that there were thousands of people there yesterday and it was the biggest garage sale to date.

I didn't take many photos.  I was too busy looking for "stuff".  However, when I came upon this house selling these handmade birdhouses, I had to pull the camera out.  Just HAD to show you these!
Wanna see some of the items I was able to pick up at the sales?  Sure you do!    I was on the hunt for anything vintage.  These are the items I found.
a 1908 Daily Reminder filled with a woman's daily writings (in Etsy Shop)
cabinet card (I can never pass these up!)
a black and white photo of the original Orange-Crush company
2 tapestry blocks that were once part of a small purse
some sheet music
an Underwood tin that housed typewriter ribbon at one time, an empty vintage box of Dennison's label reinforcements and a vintage BC headache medicine tin
This is some sort of old grater
see the grater thingie in the top?
a couple of Swift's Ice Cream labels/coasters
Rita Hayworth and Bing Crosby advertisements on the back of the ice cream labels/coasters
and this isn't vintage at all, but I thought it would be a
cool piece to display, paint, rust up or something

And this is just the sort of thing that if you blink an eye out here in California, you'll MISS!  I almost did! . . .
This is Rita Coolidge. She is a Grammy-award winning artist that will be performing at Pittsford Park this evening at 5:30pm as part of our city's free Summer Concert Series.  And where is Pittsford Park you ask?  Next to the elementary school my son attended.  Yep, right in the neighborhood!
For those of you too young to remember, Rita sang songs in the 70's and 80's like "One Fine Day", "Your Love Has Lifted me Higher" and "We're All Alone".   She is a very versatile artist in rock, pop, R&B, country, folk and more recently, jazz.
Looks like I won't be going to the movies today after all.  This performance in my own backyard is just too special for me to pass on today!

And what are YOU doing this wonderful Sunday?!

Sunny Sunday in Southern California

Sunday - it was (and still is!) a beautiful day in sunny Southern California.  Linda B. and I met at the monthly Jamestown Flea Market in Old Town Tustin around 8:30am. The place was packed as I drove by looking for a place to park.  I was excited to see so many vendors at this event (it's held every 4th Sunday of the month - rain or shine)
And look at THIS vendor's table!  It was so overwhelming to me that I didn't even START to look through all of this.  That's Linda in the second photo in the black top digging through to get some good pieces . . .
I picked up another suitcase from what I am now calling "my suitcase man", but I forgot to bring it in so I can't show you a photo.  It was a steal for 10 bucks.

But I DID bring THIS in when I returned home.  Iron . . . glass . . . vintage . . . rusty . . . and WHEELS!  I don't know what it is about tables, chairs, or whatever has wheels, but I sure do like them . . .

I cleaned the glass and rolled this beauty out onto my deck.  Not sure what I am going to use the bottom shelf for yet.  Maybe more plants?  Linda said she could see the whole thing as an outdoor bar with cocktail glasses, ice bucket, wine *smiles*.  I guess I can always remove whatever is on it (at the time) and turn it into a serving cart.
Look at the wheels and the handle.  I just love it!  And the price?  Well, it's on my deck right? *wink wink*
After the flea market (and a quick stop in Whimzy! - it was crowded) we walked a couple of blocks to the Aaron Brothers store.
On our walk back we saw this along the walkway . . .
Made a quick swoop through Vintage Lady and then walked over to Rutabegorz Restaurant.

We usually go to Quinn's after this flea market, but Linda had never been to Rutabegorz and they have their Strawberry Salad w/Chicken this time of the year.  Again, no photos of the salad, but here are the drinks.

We dined outdoors :) . . .

Round #1 Pomagrani-tini and white wine.  Round #2 some kind of orange sugar-rimmed martini and white wine.

Back to that salad.  Romaine lettuce, fresh strawberries, chicken, feta cheese, red onions, sugared almonds (oooooh these just MAKE the salad) - all tossed in Rutabegorz' Raspberry Poppyseed dressing.  Can you say YUUUUMMMEE?!

You can go to their website for additional locations in Fullerton and Orange.  And vegetarians?  This spot is for YOU.

Mirror (Vintage Photos) Mirror on the Wall

One $2 Goodwill found mirror . . .
mirror's back

Print out old family photos.  If they aren't already black and white or sepia toned, change the color of the photos before printing.  No inkjet - use a laser printer or print at a store like Kinkos.

Trim photos to fit the mirror border and attach with adhesive.  Add old buttons, watch parts and scraps of leather with E6000 . . .
Cover the mirror and apply matte decoupage over the bordered photos and you're done! . . .

Sunday at the Irvine Flea Market

What a beautiful day we are having here in Southern California!  I woke up early (4:30am as usual) but I was feeling a little achy so I got up and put a load of laundry in the washer and went back to bed.  I fell asleep and finally got up around 8.  Too late to get to the early service at Church, but not too late to get to the Irvine Flea Market.  God knows I love Him, right? :)
I don't know if it was because it was such a beautiful day or that I didn't get there until later than usual, but whoa, it was crowded!  I had to drive around a few times to get a parking space . . .
Finally made it in . . .
Oooooooooh, I saw LOTS of things I wanted, but because I was by myself, I didn't have anyone to talk me into getting it all *smiles*.

I bought some books to do more of the "coverless" book binding thing (see previous blog post), but when I got this 1942 Mixer's Manual home and started looking through it, I just couldn't tear the covers off.  And look what I found inside the book.  A handwritten notebook page with some cocktail punch recipes and a wine label . . .
And look at the names of some of the drinks inside the book . . .
And I guess this drink - Morning Cocktail is ok to have in the morning?  THAT would sure get you going (or not!) . . .
The book was given to Mary Jane's husband (or boyfriend or ?) in 1948.   It reads "Happy Pouring, Honey" . . .
Here are the other books that DID get their covers torn off.  The books with the potted roses on top.  And yes, that's a little cocktail I whipped up when I returned home this evening *hee hee* . . .
Here are the other items I picked up . . .
Some old wheels, a whisk, 2 bobbins and a towel stand.  I bought the whisk because I thought it would be cool to dip in paint and make designs on canvas.
Here's a close up of the wheels.  I know that one day I'm going to find the "perfect" table I can put these on! . . .
And here's a closer look at my cocktail glass.  I picked 2 of these up at a garage sale last weekend.  They look kinda 1950's to me.  What do you think?  Anyway, turns out the lady I bought them from is a vendor at the Jamestown Flea Market in Old Town Tustin, so I saw her the next day as well.  Small world!
I'm back home now finishing the laundry, thinking about working on another shadowbox sample, thinking about ironing clothes for work this week and thinking I'll get off this computer and just go back outside and take in some more of this beautiful California sunshine! *big smiles*

Antique Coverless Book Bundles

I saw these on Restoration Hardware's website for $29 a bundle . . .
and I thought, huuummm, $29?  I can make those.  So with a $1.50 roll of jute and 3 books I found in one of my boxes .  .  .
I removed the covers and tied the naked books up . . .
Personally, I like mine just as much - or more - than the $29 version.  Not sure where they will end up inside, so for now they will remain outside on the table.

This is how Restoration Hardware displayed them . . .
I think I'll be going to Friends of the Library next Saturday for their $1 a bag book sale!
