ACEO's versus ATC's

ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. These cards are 3 1/2" by 2 1/2".  ATC stands for Artist Trading Card.  These cards are ALSO 3 1/2" by 2 1/2".
I am clear on the fact that ATC's are not to be sold - only traded.  So what about ACEO's?  What's the difference between an ATC and a ACEO?  I see artists selling these "art cards" under the title of ACEO in their etsy shops.
In my research, I read where non-artists were being "left out in the cold" because they didn't have atc's to trade.  A group of artists realized this and started making their cards available for sale.  The cards are also sold either as originals or editions.

What is YOUR understanding of ACEO's versus ATC's?

My understanding is ATCs are never for sale; ACEOs are for sale by artists who want to sell or non-artists. But I'd think anyone who creates is an artist.

I'm not sure, but at least part of me (the cynical part) thinks ACEOs are just a gimmick to allow people to sell their ATCs without the guilt.
And I'll keep thinking that until I get the urge to sell one. LOL!

I had no idea what an ACEO even was. I've never made either. If you make suomething that is completely yours, I see no reason one can't sell that item. I am speaking as a person that has never attempted to sell anything.
Seems like a silly rule to me!

This has always been a "head scratcher". Looks like a tomato/tomahto situation to me!

Dunno...never heard of it. I doubt whether I'll ever have to worry about selling one of my ATC's....

So confusing, all I know is I am addicted to them- first getting introduced to them by your lovely ones- then actually trying to make my own. There is something so inviting about creating in that tiny space, I love it! Your cards are right there on my dresser in my studio inspiring me every day, I love them! (And Michael is hanging in my studio too!!) xoxo deb

I'm with paperqueen! ACEO is just a politically correct way of selling an ATC. LOL! I'll keep trading and find something else to sell.

I think if it is your art ... whatever it's called ... and you want to sell it ... and someone wants to buy it ... then go for it!
I think selling someone else's that you traded is a very big no no!

Hmmm, actually I learned from your posting as I didn't even realize that ATC were only to be traded so I guess I'm no help. All I can say is I L♥ve my collection of ACEO I've purchased from other artists, it's a wonderful way to own a mini masterpiece. ;-)
