Faux Rust Technique

Several people have e-mailed me to ask how I created the faux rust pieces I used in my cruise journal (Grungeboard faux rusted heart and wings) and notebook ("S" is a faux rusted Grungeboard letter on the front cover).

These are the products that I use to do the faux rusting . . .

These are Grungeboard pieces that have been faux rusted with one coat and are laying out to "cure" . . .

More Grungeboard pieces that I have faux rusted more than once to give them an even richer, darker, grungier look . . .

I've faux rusted metal items as well. Click on the photo below for glazing techniques I used on some of these pieces . . .

Faux rusted ceramic bisque angel I did . . .

More faux rusted Grungeboard pieces (sorry, both items already sold on Etsy) . . .

Faux rusted Grungeboard wings on Bessie Smith (sorry, this item has been sold)

The body of this paper mache coffee filter doll I made is faux rusted as well . . .

My strong suggestions . . . Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions before using the Metal Effects products. Use gloves, work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask for prolonged use of the product.

I hope that I have answered your faux rust questions. If you have others, please e-mail me.
Have an art-filled day today!

Hey! I haven't seen that brand of faux rust, so I use another. Might have to see if some of the other stores carry it!
So anywho, I pulled out the grungeboard last night and used a couple pieces on my unbird box. lol
I didn't rust it this time.

Hi Sherry, I'm sure I don't need to ask how the cruise was! Your rust projects or gorgeous. I've been offline a bit lately but I wanted to say hi and tell you I'm always checking out your blog. I love how you change your header to go with the season! Happy Creating!! Julie

Modern Masters also makes other chemically activated paint products to produce blue bronze and green bronze patinas! I loved using them in faux finishes in my home and my clients' homes! Try the bronze - it's glorious! And our Benjamin Moore has them, but check on line, too.

Sherry these look so authentic. I will have to see if Michael's here (in Canada) has this product. I did not see it the last time I was there.

Thank you!

Those things are GORGEOUS Sherry - the faux rust products are pretty expensive in France so I end up just leaving bits of metal out in the rain for months on end ;-)- Means I don't finish all my projects as quickly as I should!
